The curvaceous 356 was Porsche’s first production road car. Designed by “Ferry” Porsche,  it was light, nimble and fast and soon found its way onto the worlds race tracks where it proved to be a real giant slayer and established Porsche’s reputation as a manufacturer of fine sports cars. It was raced and rallied throughout its seventeen year production life in events such as the 1000km of Buenos Aires, the Mille Miglia, and the Le Mans 24 hours. Success in events such as the Targa Florio and the Carrera Panamerica led to the naming of future models. Rapidly shaking off its Volkswagen roots, the 356 was constantly developed and improved, being fitted with increasingly powerful engines culminating in the sublime Carrera 2 and the highly sought after and truly gorgeous Speedster, which had primarily been created for the American market. It is a little jewel of a car. Its cheeky soap smooth shape is one that even non enthusiasts love and looking at one always makes me smile.
